Güngören district in Istanbul
Güngören is a district of Istanbul. Located on the Çatalca Peninsula in the western half of the province, it is the smallest district in Türkiye in terms of area, with 7 square kilometers. Established as a district on June 3, 1992, Güngören is bordered by Zeytinburnu and Esenler to the east, Bakırköy to the south, and Bahçelievler to the west. The district consists of 11 neighborhoods and has no rural settlements.
History of Güngören:
The Çırpıcı stream holds a significant place in the history of Güngören Village, once known as "Vitoz." Its importance also lies in its suitability as the first resting place for infantry armies on their way to Europe. This stream and the Çırpıcı meadow on its banks were once one of Istanbul's most famous picnic areas. From the first weeks of Hıdrellez until winter, people would flock here every week, just as they would to Kağıthane and Göksu.
Population:
The population growth of the settlements within the current boundaries of Güngören District is consistent with the development of the Istanbul urban area. The population, which was 259 in 1935, began to rise rapidly from 1960 onwards. Administrative changes and the establishment of a municipal organization were largely effective in this rapid increase. As a result, the population exceeded 20,000 in 1970, 115,000 in 1985, and 180,000 in 1990. The population of Güngören, which was 272,950 in 2000, reached 318,545 in 2007. After showing an increase until 2007, the population began to decline every year. As of 2020, the population of Güngören is 280,299.
